Focus Foundation: Board of Directors

Chairman of the Board: Robert Hungerford

Robert practices civil litigation at the firm Hungerford, Tomyn, Lawrenson & Nichols. Robert has extensive experience in insurance, personal injury, aviation, product liability, administrative and employment matters. He appears regularly in the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and before (and as counsel to) a number of administrative tribunals. Prior to founding HTL&N in 2003, Robert was a partner at Campney & Murphy for 26 years. Robert received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of British Columbia. Robert’s community involvement includes past President of Endeavour, past Director and Officer of Community Care Foundation, past Director Vancouver Public Library and past member of the Youth Committee of Vancouver Foundation. Robert joined the Board of Focus Foundation in 2010.

Vice Chair of the Board: Charlotte Faulkner

Charlotte is a Vice President and Director of Odlum Brown Limited and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. She has over 21 years of industry experience and provides portfolio management for a wide-spectrum of clients including families, trusts, corporations and estates. Prior to joining Odlum Brown in 1991, she worked at CIBC- Foreign Exchange. Today, she specializes in equity growth and portfolio analysis. Charlotte is an avid skier, traveller, and jazz lover, and enjoys good food, wine and being in the company of her family and friends. Her hobbies include photography and listening to Bluegrass music. Charlotte joined the Focus Foundation Board in 2013.

Secretary: Noreen Angus

Noreen Angus founded OfficeSuites on Broadway 13 years ago, a full service business center, to serve the needs of professionals, small businesses, and corporate satellite offices in Vancouver. Previously Noreen was a Certified Management Consultant for more than 15 years. Having worked in both the Corporate Sector and in serving the needs of small, growing businesses, Noreen understands the challenges of establishing and growing a business. Noreen is a past Director of the Vancouver Board of Trade and of the Leadership and Management Development Council of British Columbia. Noreen joined the Board of Focus Foundation in 2011.

Treasurer: Alphil Guilaran

Alphil is the Executive Director and co-founder of the Financial Literacy Counsel, which began as a university student club in 1999. Today, the Financial Literacy Counsel teaches over 5,000 Canadians every year as well as serves over 1,200 private, institutional and corporate clients. His training and work experience include business development and portfolio management research for CIBC World Markets and portfolio management administration for RBC Dominion Securities. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 2000, specializing in Political Science and Economics and completed the Insurance Council of BC Course in 1998 and the Canadian Securities Course in 1999. He is also a Million Dollar Roundtable qualifying member and an Elder Planning Counselor. Alphil joined the Focus Foundation Board of Directors in spring 2014.

Robin Carkett

Robin is an Agent with Euler Hermes Canada. Euler Hermes helps companies of all sizes, wherever they trade, to safeguard and grow their business. Robin works with a range of clients both locally and internationally. Previously, Robin was a senior account manager with Canada Wide Media Ltd. He also worked on the advertising floor at the Financial Times in London, UK and holds a BA in History from Royal Holloway College, University of London and a PGC in Sports Law from Kings College, University of London. Robin joined the Focus Foundation Board in 2013.

Bruce Jackson

Bruce Jackson is a Managing Partner at C-Media Digital, a local marketing firm specializing in digital-out-of-home advertising in retail spaces. He has over 30 years experience in sales/marketing and advertising in both North America and South East Asia.  Bruce is the current Vice President of the St.George’s Old Boys Association (The Georgians), having sat on their board for eight years. He is very active in the field of addictions, treatment, and recovery as a volunteer interventionist and counselor. Bruce’s unique combination of experience in communications and promotions complements the skill sets of the Focus Foundation board members. Bruce is a valued new member, joining the board in spring 2014.

Cara Savege

Cara Savege has been an independent mortgage broker with Invis for the past ten years. She has helped hundreds of home owners purchase their first home. Having lent almost one billion during her career, team Cara Savege, mortgage brokers, have grown year after year since its inception in 2008. Cara leads the team of like-minded women with a goal of constantly growing and achieving targets while contributing to local communities through various efforts. Prior to Invis, Cara spent twelve years at Vancity in various roles which led to a wealth of knowledge, contacts and relationships. Cara is a proud member of the Vancouver Club and was a Board Member from 2005-2012. During her time, Cara founded The Women of 915, a women’s group in the Vancouver Club, developing connections, friendships and continuously striving to link relationships together. In addition, from 2003-2012 Cara has volunteered to sit on several committees within the club which included being Chairman of Membership and Signatures Service Committees, as well as Chair of the Ambassador’s Committee. While Cara sat on these committees the under 30 sector of the club grew in record numbers, which even created a wait list- the first time in many years.

Understanding the importance of education in a child’s life to empower them to become our future leaders and contributing citizens, Cara was drawn to the mission of Focus Foundation. Having led Focus Foundation’s Auxiliary Committee for over a year, Cara officially joined the Board in 2015.

Dr. Jeffrey Schiffer

Jeffrey J. Schiffer is a Canadian of mixed ancestry. His mother is Metis from Manitoba, and his father was born in Germany. Schiffer was born and raised in Coast Salish territory in Vancouver, British Columbia. He holds a BA in anthropology from UBC, and a PhD in anthropology and education at Columbia University in New York. Dr. Schiffer has conducted applied anthropological research and community engagement with Indigenous communities in Canada, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. His dissertation research focused on the challenges that government and large NGOs face in implementing culturally relevant services within the complexity of urban Aboriginal diversity in Western Canada. He currently sits as Special Projects Officer at Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Services Society (VACFSS) where he manages the Culturally Relevant Urban Wellness (CRUW) Program. Schiffer is an Associate with the International Centre of Child Rights and Development (IICRD) affiliated with Royal Roads University, and holds certifications in Aboriginal Focusing-Oriented Therapy from the Focusing Institute of New York. Jeff joined the Board in 2015.

Robyn Crisanti

Robyn Crisanti is the Director, Public Affairs, for Port Metro Vancouver. Robyn oversees government and media relations and drives the strategic management of issues. Robyn has over 25 years of experience in marketing and strategic communications, working for organizations in the advertising, financial services, association, utilities, biotechnology, and regulatory sectors. She has also been a change management leader and project manager on major, enterprise-wide technology implementations.

Robyn obtained her BA in psychology from the University of British Columbia and her MBA in marketing from McGill University. She is an accredited and award-winning member of the International Association of Business Communicators and a guest lecturer at UBC’s Sauder School of Business. She is also an active community volunteer, particularly supporting women’s volleyball. Robyn joined the Board in 2015.

Honorary Governor (Former Chair of the Board)

Gary Powroznik, FCA

Gary joined the Board of Focus Foundation in March 2005 and took on the role of Chairman. Gary is the founder and Managing Director of G-Force Group, a Vancouver based professional services firm helping clients enhance or recover their investments in business, real estate or loans. Formerly, Gary was a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) for 27 years and President of PwC Real Estate Inc. Gary was also the Managing Partner for PwC in British Columbia for 13 years. Gary has had extensive involvement with professional and community organizations including: formerly serving as a Director of the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation Board, the Sauder Business School Advisory Board at the University of British Columbia, and the BC Business Council and a Vice Chair on its Executive Committee for several years. Gary was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia in 1996 for his distinguished service to his profession and the community.

Executive Director of Focus Foundation of BC

Dr. Robert Kissner

Robert Kissner, B.A. (Honours), M.A., Ph.D., R.S.W. is a specialist in stress and trauma with an interest in innovative ways to facilitate resilience and emotional recovery. He has experience in clinical practice, agency administration, teaching, research, and as a social innovator and entrepreneur. He is a former member of the Simon Fraser University Senate and Board of Governors. He served as President of the BC Association of Social workers and was BC provincial representative to CASW. He was awarded the CASW Distinguished Service Award in 2012. In 1975, Robert founded the Focus Foundation of British Columbia, an addictions and education agency working with adolescents with complex needs and youth who are unsuccessful in the public school system. As an entrepreneur in health and wellness, he established a company providing research-based solutions for health issues such as depression, abuse, trauma and medically unexplained symptoms. Robert taught a wide range of subjects for the University of Chicago, SFU, Trinity Western University, UCFV and Douglas College, including courses in social work, education, criminology, and sociology. He has travelled extensively, lecturing and writing on developmental approaches, working with youth, addictions, stress and emotions. Bob is a frequent speaker in forums such as conferences, the United Kingdom European Symposium on Addictive Disorders, the International Council on Alcohol and Addictions, the Society for Research on Adolescence, the American Association of Orthopsychiatry, the Royal Society of Medicine and The Royal College of General Practitioners in London, UK.

Robert is a non-voting member of the Board.
